Bermain Tanah dan Air is a performance that explores both the material and conceptual dimensions of the relationship between humans and the territory they inhabit. Januar seeks to attune himself to the soil and water of Lembana as material entities; yet, in a speculative and simultaneously ironic manner, the performance also reads “tanah air” (homeland) as a political construct—an idea of the nation-state, territorial boundaries, and claims of sovereignty that are often understood in abstract terms, but remain distant from the lived, everyday experience of the body.
